Water Damage Service Pre-Screening | DIY Water Damage

Selecting the proper water damage service to complete your water damage restoration can be quite a task!  That's why here at DIY Water Damage we drew up a water damage service screening article to find the company that's right for you.

Certification

Make sure that your water damage restoration service is currently an Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification certified firm in the area of flood damage restoration. The IICRC forces firms to complete a rigorous course and passing examination scores for permission to use the IICRC badge and logo. Also, many firms may be IICRC certified for carpet or floor cleaning, but not for water damage restoration.

Insurance companies may not pay if you do not have an IICRC certified firm perform the work. Click here to find an IICRC certified firm.

Equipment

Ask the firm if they have the equipment necessary to complete your job. If you have wood floor damage, ceiling damage, or any special circumstances state that to the firm on the phone as to make sure they have the equipment necessary to take care of your situation.

Specialty & Misc. Information

Make sure that the firm you are calling specializes in water damage restoration, and not just carpet, upholstery, or flood cleaning. Having a non-specialized firm can lead to disastrous consequences, including the ruining of your furniture, walls, flooring, etc.

Check consumer portals/forums such as the Better Business Bureau, Angie's List, and websites with reviews of water damage services.

Ask the company how many years they have been in business, and how long they have specifically completed water damage restoration services.

If you have a friend, family member, or colleague who has had a good experience with a company in your area, I would defiantly give them a call.

If you had a good experience with a carpet or upholstery cleaner, give them a call and see if they also double up as a water damage service.

Follow your instinct. I know it sounds corny, but you can often select the best company for you by speaking to them on the phone and asking the questions which I specified earlier in this section. If the person on the other end does not wish to answer your questions or gets short, they are probably not the water damage service made for you.
